So, you’ve decided to start up a blog have you?
Great! Then here are four important things to bear in mind…
1. Be Passionate
The best advice I can give when starting up a blog is this: only do it if it’s a subject that you’re passionate about! Blogging is a time-consuming process, so it’s absolutely crucial that you have a keen interest in the subject, or you’ll soon lose the enthusiasm you started out with, and end up moving onto the next venture. It can be tough coming up with new ideas for blog posts, as well, and it will be even tougher if you have little interest in the topic.
2. Write About What You Know
Again, this is an absolute must! People are only going to read your blog if you have something interesting and insightful to say about the topic in question. And in order to do this, you need to know it inside out. If you’re not an expert in the subject you’re blogging about, it will soon become very clear to your readers, and they’ll soon go elsewhere.
3. Add Regular, Fresh & High-Quality Content
If you want to attract a lot of readers to your blog, then you need to be adding high-quality posts quite regularly, or people will soon stop visiting. A regularly updated blog with lots of comments, shares, likes and social interaction is also important when it comes to ranking your website in the search engines (which will allow you to attract even more visitors) and the only way to achieve this is to post high quality content, regularly.
4. Be Patient
I don’t care who you are, generating traffic to your blog takes time. You’ll need to put in some effort promoting it online via social networking tools, video sites and forums, amongst many other vehicles, and it may take a while to build up an online reputation. Writing blog posts is pretty labour-intensive too, so you need to be committed to it and in it for the long-haul.
If you’re thinking about starting up a blog, either alongside your existing website or as a way of earning an additional income, then make sure you bear these four points in mind.
If you do, you’ll stand a far better chance of creating a successful, well-read and ultimately profitable blog!
